OEAA Nominees: Music list is out

The Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards have released this year’s nominees for music (as well as arts, etc.). Read the entire music list.

It’s a good list of Omaha music, especially if you’re looking for something new to listen to.

I enjoy that the awards have gotten the categories down pretty well, with a couple exceptions. Bands are in the right categories and there are very few bands that a) are in completely the wrong category, b) are not from anywhere near Omaha or c) I’ve never, ever heard of.

The Mynabirds or Icky Blossoms should win best artist and best album, in my opinion. Both of their records were fantastic and they’re the two biggest things happening in Omaha right now. Both records are great.

My only qualms are this: Why is there an “Indie” music category? Aren’t all these bands “indie?” Yes. I know it’s being used as a music genre, but I’ve always thought “alternative” was a much better adjective than “indie.” The Grammys use it.

The other one is “Best Progressive/Experimental/Funk.” Lumping in Satchel Grande with InDreama is kind of a weird deal. I understand that there aren’t really a whole lot of progressive, experimental or funk bands so giving them each their own category probably won’t work. I don’t know the solution to this one, but it is goofy.

Read the list after the jump.
