The Thermals sign to Saddle Creek Records

Saddle Creek Records is adding some punk to its stable. Portland punk and rock group The Thermals will release its upcoming album, “Desperate Ground,” on Saddle Creek on April 16. (Pre-order it here.)

Prior to this, the band released albums on Kill Rock Stars and Sub Pop. It’s a a really good get for Saddle Creek to pull a pretty well-known band like The Thermals into the family.

“We’ve been fans forever, so we’re stoked to welcome them to the family,” the label said on its website.

“Desperate Ground” was finished hours before Hurricane Sandy hit Hoboken, N.J., where the band made the record with producer John Agnello.

A press release calls the new record a “scrappy and scratchy return-to-form,” which I’m absolutely cool with. I like the band’s lo-fi, head-bobbing style, which is catchy without being super-shined pop-punk.

It sounds like this record is about war, death and destruction. I’m not sure if it’s explicitly a concept album, but I’m excited about the stated theme: “the (murky) tale of a lone rogue in the night. One man, one path, one sword. An unceasing urge to destroy.”

Watch the video for the band’s excellent song “Now We Can See” and check out the tracklist for “Desperate Ground” below.

Sub Pop recently announced it would re-release the Thermals’ first three albums: 2003′s “More Parts Per Million,” 2004′s “F***in’ A,” and 2006′s “The Body, The Blood, The Machine.”

The band’s also headed out on tour in March, including the week of SXSW, where I’ll definitely catch their set (and give you the skinny on the band’s new tracks).

The most important question, when are they going to play in Omaha?

  2. Kevin Coffey Kevin Coffey says:

A valid question. They were last here in May 2011. I imagine they’ll come through Omaha sometime this summer since they’ve played here before and their label is here.
