Former Neva Dinova frontman Jake Bellows has been working on solo songs for quite awhile now.
Bellows apparently gave up on music after 15 years with Neva Dinova, but Ben Brodin made him lay down a bunch of demos before Bellows moved to LA. Eventually, Bellows began playing his songs with Brodin, Ryan Fox, Todd Fink and Heath Koontz.
Now he’s back with a new album, “New Ocean,” which will be out Aug. 6 on CD and LP through Saddle Creek Records and cassette tape via Majestic Litter. Brodin engineered the album at ARC Studios in Omaha. Pre-order the album at Saddle Creek’s webstore.
“New Ocean” was written over the course of a year while Bellows, Brodin and Fox worked on a film score for a screening at Film Streams. The group worked remotely on the songs, which are shaped by cosmology and mythology. The album hopes to “create the world he wants to see instead of reflect the world that is,” said the press release.
My personal favorite from the collection of songs is the title track, “New Ocean,” a slow-building rocker that Bellows often designates as his set closer.
“‘New Ocean’ is about relinquishing the fear of death and recognizing that we are all a part of the same thing,” Bellows said. ”Our theory of the beginning of the universe is the big bang – a sound. What gave birth to the universe is our one tool that we can change the universe with.”
Since he debuted his new songs and band, I’ve been a big fan. I’m happy these songs will finally be able to reside on my iPhone for me to listen to whenever I please.
You can hear that song and a sampling of rest of the album via Bellows’ trailer for “New Ocean.” (I guess trailers for albums are a thing now.) Check out the trailer and a tracklisting after the jump.
“Help” was released on a cassette through Majestic Litter last year, and that release has a variety of demos for other Bellows songs that didn’t end up on “New Ocean.”
