Weekend Shows: Deer Tick, Satchel Grande, of Montreal and more

Satchel Grande

Tonight, Deer Tick hits Slowdown with opener Robert Ellis. Deer Tick delivered one of the best shows I saw all of last year when they rocked late into the night on a Sunday. I dig the band’s new album, “Negativity,” and I talked to guitarist Ian O’Neil recently about the record and it’s very personal songs.

I’ll be there tonight, so check back tomorrow (or tonight if you’re lucky!) for a review of the show and a photo gallery. 9 p.m. show. $17.

• Also happening tonight is Satchel Grande at The Waiting Room. The funky dudes, who can field an entire baseball team, are the Band of the Week over at Omaha.com. I’m interested that Mariachi Zapata is opening the show. Could we get a funky mariachi collaboration? We shall see. $7 at the door.

• Remember, it’s also Benson First Friday, so there are more shows and art gallery happenings. You could check out a show with Mint Wad Willy at Barley Street and another with Touch People at The Sydney.

• If you’re into the hip-hop, you can’t go wrong with Tech N9ne down at the Bourbon Theatre. Excellent local rapper Scru Face Jean is one of the openers, and is worth the trip. 8 p.m. show. $35.

• A good time is almost always had when of Montreal hits the stage. Check those guys Saturday at The Waiting Room. The band’s latest, “lousy with sylvianbriar,” is a rocking good time (with the occasional “Dark Side of the Moon” undertone) that I didn’t expect from them, to be totally honest. 9 p.m. show. $18 if you get or tickets today or $20 day of show.
