Before they went after professional actors, the Coen brothers sought actual folk singers to portray the titular singer-songwriter in their much-praised film “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst revealed that he was one of the many musicians and actors that auditioned for the role when he spoke to Oscar Isaac, the actor who did portray Llewyn Davis, in an interview between the two in Interview Magazine.
“Thank god for everyone that I didn’t get it,” Oberst commented.
Oberst went up for the role along with “a lot of musicians and actors” and he said that T Bone Burnett and the Coen brothers almost gave up on casting the role.
Oberst and Isaac ended up both performing at a concert in New York that featured songs from the film as well as other folk songs. Other musicians at the concert included Elvis Costello and Joan Baez and Jack White, and that concert, “Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis,” aired on Showtime back in December.
